We started as a small gift shop in the corner of the historic Hotel Alex Johnson and quickly outgrew space. We then moved next door to a large retail space and a door was cut through the Hotel Alex Johnson lobby to accommodate the guests with a gift store.

In 1994 Linc and Elaine Ainsworth purchased the store and focused on providing the hotel guests and people in the Black Hills with primarily locally and regionally made quality gifts.

The Alex Johnson Mercantile takes pride in finding good merchandise, made locally, for visitors to take home and remind them of their time in the Black Hills. While the focus has been on Black Hills Gold, Trisha Waldron, Native American arts and crafts, sculpture/bronze, pottery, and original wall art, they also offer a jewelry line exclusively for the Hotel Alex Johnson. Called Sassy and Juicy is a trendy, fun line for women.

Located in the historic Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City, SD, Alex Johnson Mercantile offers local and regional products that represent the history of the beautiful Black Hills.

Our product line features Lakota craftwork, beadwork, feather art, pottery, carvings, Black Hills Gold, and the Alex Johnson Mercantile jewelry line, Sassy and Juicy.
